An alternance training program (duale Ausbildung) combines theory instruction and practical experience. You work at a business and attend classes at a vocational school at specific times. For alternance training  in skilled trades, there are also inter-company vocational training centers, which act as a third place of learning. You thus apply lessons to practice directly and gain professional experience right from the start. You also get paid a salary while you are learning: known as apprenticeship salary, it is at least €724 per month in the first year of an apprenticeship (2026 figure).
